On Wednesday the GSPCA once again welcomed Dementia Friendly Guernsey.
Dementia Friendly Guernsey wants to encourage as many people as possible to take a local dementia awareness course and the GSPCA team attended a session of training thanks to Julie Bulpitt from Dementia Friendly Guernsey here at the GSPCA.
Dementia Friendly Guernsey kindly have run training sessions for the GSPCA in October 2017, February 2019, February 2020 but sadly not had a recent session until now due to the pandemic.
Every day the GSPCA rush animals to the vets needing vet care and treatment and one very special cat called Oopsie had a very large operation.
Oopsie is one of the oldest cats at the GSPCA at 17 years old who arrived in the Autumn after her owner sadly passed away.
Oopsie is a lovely cat but unfortunately had a nasty growth in ear that needs removing.
We are pleased to say te operation went well and she is now recuperating at the GSPCA.
As part of the Easter celebrations and our 150th year we have planned some Easter themed Childrens Art Events and also Easter Educational Guided Tours to see some of the areas of the Animal Shelter, look back at our rich history and the plans for the future.
Childrens Easter Art Event
These are going to be run by two of the most arty team members we have at the GSPCA Sarah Harrison and Karen Lane both who not only have a wealth of knowledge in the arts and creativity, they have a huge range of arty items to help entertain your child.
The GSPCA asks that you think of your animals with the weather bomb due.
Bad weather means it is difficult for hedgehogs and wild birds to feed normally, and young seal pups can easily be separated from their mothers.
Also we have to ensure our pets are safe and we must think for those that live outside if they are safe and if any precautions need to be taken.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "With the high winds we are experiencing in Guernsey many wild animals and birds find it difficult to find food and can easily be injured."
Last Friday the GSPCA have had a wonderful group of 11 staff volunteering from Collas Crill.
Their team arrived at lunch time and helped in many areas over the afternoon at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
Tim Pellett GSPCA Community and Training Officer said “It was great to greet, meet and get the lovely team from Collas Crill helping around the GSPCA last Friday.”
“They’ve been a great help and helped in the cattery, kennels, gardening and hospital area.”
“We also gave them a tour to see behind the scenes and talk to them about our work.”
A wonderful event was recently held at Les Cotils in aid of the GSPCA and Young Lives vs Cancer.
Louise Gambrell GSPCA Treasurer who attended the event said “On 12th March Wendy Woodcock and Elaine Lockett held a charity lunch in aid of the GSPCA and Young Lives V Cancer.”
“This was the fourth lunch they have organised in two years.”
“Wendy has also held an open garden and Elaine often holds second hand clothing sales to raise more funds.”
“They have raised thousands of pounds for both charities with all their events.”
On Tuesday many of the artists and sponosrs were invited by Autism Guernsey and the GSPCA to Government House for the Official Launch of the Puffin Parade.
Both Autism Guernsey and GSPCA are extremely grateful to Mrs Cripwell who is the Patron of Autism Guernsey and the Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB, CBE who is the Patron of the GSPCA for making all feel so welcome and host what was a wonderful start to the Puffin Parade.
We celebrate our 150 year history this year and we couldn’t do so much without our incredible team of staff, volunteers and supporters.
Last night at the GSPCA we held our third volunteer induction evening of 2023.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Last night we held our third Volunteer Induction Evening of 2023.”
“Team member Sarah Harrison greeted the 4 attendees who arrived at 630pm where they had an induction which was followed by a chat with GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne.”
On Friday for the first time the GSPCA were called out to what was either an injured pigeon or bird of prey at Admiral Park.
GSPCA Ambulance Driver Neil Hughes was quickly dispatched to find neither but instead a bird that we have never rescued before at the GSPCA.
Neil kindly rescued and returned the stunned bird to the GSPCA where is was neither identified as a bird of prey or pigeon but a species which migrates 1000’s of miles and is rarely seen in Guernsey.
We celebrate our 150 year history this year and we couldn’t do so much without our incredible team of staff, volunteers and supporters.
This Wednesday we hold our third volunteer induction evening of 2023.
The volunteer age for inductions is now from 16 years and up and we have opportunities in all parts of our activities here at the GSPCA.
From helping with our busy ambulance service to walking dogs, our full cattery to our packed rabbit and small animal department, over 100 hedgehogs to over 30 reptiles, gardening to helping on reception.
